About 1/3 of our lives is spent in our beds, and despite this many Castle Rock homeowners don’t give much thought to the health of our mattresses. But for a truly good night sleep don’t you want to sleep on something clean?

While we all no doubt regularly clean our bedsheets and linen, our pillows should also be on a cleaning schedule as well.  Not to get overly gross, but mattresses collect quite a bit while we sleep. Things such as: dirt, bacteria, dead skin, sweat, dust mites among other things… you can google what else if you truly wish to know.  That being the case it would definitely be a good idea to clean your mattress about every 6 months. 

How do I clean my mattress? 

You would want to start by cleaning all bedding you may have: mattress covers, duvet inserts and covers, quilts, sheet, pillows etc. Whatever can be cleaned in your washing machine should be washed on hot to kill off mites and disinfect. Something that I like to do as well is add a bit of  lavender oils. They are naturally antibacterial and will give your bedding a calming scent to help you sleep.

Next you will use the upholstery attachment on you vacuum cleaner and clean the surface of your mattress. A surprising amount of dirt and bacteria can make it’s way through sheets and bedding. 

Now to deodorize and sanitize you will sprinkle baking soda over the top of the mattress and leave it for several minutes. The longer the better! The baking soda is an alkaline salt (similar to what we use in our cleaning process) and thus neutralizes bacteria that are in your mattress. In addition it changes the pH of your mattress and can cause bacteria to release. When you are ready you will then vacuum the mattress again to extract all the baking soda, giving special attention to do it a second time. Once you are done, be sure to empty and clean your vacuum filter, as soon as you are done and then clean your vacuum cleaner.
