It is commonly known as DuPont Teflon. This treatment is a preventative that keeps liquids from actually soaking and bonding to the acid dye blocker, but its biggest job is to resist dirt and body oils. 

By resisting dry dirt, less soil bonds to the carpet an upholstery fibers  therefore, your vacuum efforts are more effective in removing dirt and soils. Making sure that you have a sufficient amount of protector on your carpet will help keep the dirt from bonding and oxidizing the fibers. If abrasive dirt is allowed to remain in your carpet fibers it acts like sandpaper on your traffic area they will slowly tear and grind at the fiber and once this happens there is no way to bring them back to their original condition.
