1. Place a high-quality doormats in front of each door in your home.
2. For carpets and rugs, vacuum at least twice per week. I recommend Fridays and Mondays for no particular reason. Just what works for me. 
3. Kick off those shoes. Enforce a no-shoe rule in your home. Shoes track in the snow and mud during our Colorado winters.
4. Keep a brush in the maintenance closet or laundry room so you can groom your pet at least once a week. This will keep pet hair and dander at bay. 
5. Clean spills and accidents as soon as they happen This trick prevents liquid or solidified materials from permanently staining your carpets.
6. When relocating your heavy furniture, don’t drag them on the carpets. The dragging motion could actually burn the carpets, especially Polyester carpets. 
7. Spot clean your carpets with vinegar and water before the stains set in. Once the set they may become permanent even to a professional carpet cleaner. 
8. Place a carpet runner over traffic areas like hallways. Also make sure your runner gets cleaned regularly also or else it will be no benefit. 
9. Clean carpet professional at least once year. Homes with pets and kids or just larger families in general will require professional carpet cleaning at least twice a year. Once in the middle of winter and once n the middle of summer.
