Thou you will need to turn down the psi on upholstery and also turn down the heat as not to shrink the upholstery fiber. Also you will use a different cleaning tool, as the upholstery require a upholstery tool vs a cleaning wand for the carpets. Technically thou they have the sam type of function. Upholstery that is made of cotton or silk will require a dry cleaning solvent solution. 

Also you will need to use a different cleaning solution for the upholstery that is more ph sensitive and gentle on the fibers, where as carpets can handle a more aggressive solution. While both solutions are designed to clean fabrics and yarn, they contain different chemicals that are better designed to break down soils as well as body oils.

When it comes to odors you will probably see the carpet cleaning technician use a bio-enzyme that will work to kills odors in carpets and or upholstery.
