You'll want to wear soft house shoes or ever white socks so that the body oil from your feet won't get into the carpet. Body oil can attract more dirt for the carpets and as a side note body oil can also cause your upholstery to attract more dirt. 

Cleaning spills and stains makes as soon as they happen will prevent staining. Using a TLC Carpet Care spot treatment on spills can also make it easier to clean and will reduce the chance of the stain wicking up.
